America's History... The HOLLYWOOD Sign.
The word "Hollywood" resonates throughout the world as a beacon of inspiration that celebrates the human spirit, and here's your chance to own a piece of the world's most famous sign, Hollywood, that helped turn a little town in California into the powerful dream machine it is today! Note: We no longer sell collector pieces of the original Hollywood sign or Hollywood Sign Blueprints as we have sold out.
In 1923, "At a cost of $21,000, a fifty foot tall sign was erected on Mt. Lee by the developers spelling out 'HOLLYWOODLAND'. The original sign was lit with thousands of light bulbs and could be seen for miles. Within 15 years the sign was in complete disrepair, not to mention, the scene of a suicide when failed actress Lillian Millicent jumped from the 'H'. The last blow came in 1949 when a wind storm knocked down the infamous 'H'. At that point, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce restored the sign, shortening it to read 'Hollywood.' An iconic landmark was born." As quoted by the Hollywoodland Realty Co. (creators of the original "HOLLYWOOD" sign).
By the late 1970's the sign needed more than a makeover, the wood was falling apart and an 'O' had fallen down the hill. The sign had been defaced and someone set fire to the bottom of an 'L.' The sign had to be taken down and a new one built at a cost of $250,000. The Hollywood Hills laid empty as they did before 1923 for three months. In November of 1978, the new Hollywood sign was unveiled to the world and is standing to this day on the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California.
